Some see this election as the dawn of a new day with Arroyo no longer President. All I can say is don’t get your hopes up. Remember Corazon Aquino? So many promises, so few realized. Not to mentioned some serious allegations of corruption. Lest you’ll be fooled, Mrs Aquino’s reign wasn’t all that good. And so with this next Aquino, don’t bet your life on it. By the way, he’s Catholic.

Election’s real winner: Iglesia ni Cristo unity!

But for me the biggest winner is once again the Iglesia ni Cristo. For once again unity was observed by its members. This unity caused some people to worry. As reported by GMA News, some “netizens raised suspicions over the election results shown in several clustered precincts in Rodriguez, Rizal.” To them it was suspicious that voters from certain precincts showed they all voted for Aquino! Upon further investigation, it turned out the precincts were inside housing resettlement of the Iglesia ni Cristo and 99 percent of the voters in those precincts are members. For some rabid anti-INC they say 99% is not unity because it’s not 100%. They exclaimed “there’s the crack”! Little do they know that not all of the people in the settlements are INC as some are converts from other religion and whose spouses or children are not yet members.

And in case there are still people who sneer at the INC unity in voting, know that the intention is not to make winners of candidates but rather to be one in judgment, a teaching of the Lord Jesus.

The Manila Standard continues it report thus:

Among the religious groups, it is only the Iglesia ni Cristo which has proven that it can provide the swing votes in close contests whether for national or local positions.

The contest for the presidency would probably have been closer if the INC endorsed former President Joseph Estrada instead of Senator Noynoy Aquino.

There are only guesstimates on the actual INC vote. Some say it is as low as one million but others say it could be as high as three million. Let’s assume the INC vote is two million. From the trend in the present count, Aquino will probably lead Estrada by 5 million votes. If you subtract two million from Aquino and add two million to Estrada then it could have been a much closer fight and Estrada would have enjoyed the bandwagon effect which could get thousands more votes.

The INC factor was probably most felt in the senatorial race. Of the 12 candidates endorsed by the INC, 11 are in the Magic 12. Of the winning senatorial candidates, only returning candidate—Sen. Serge Osmeña —was not endorsed by INC. The only INC-endorsed candidate outside the Magic 12 is Rep. Ruffy Biazon who in the latest count is in number 14 and apparently has no chance of making it.

It looks as though the INC vote is the only religious vote that can be counted on in Philippine politics.

Dynasties

Political dynasties are not new in the Philippines but it seems this year there are a lot more of them. Some are old dynasties like the Marcoses and Aquinos, others are new such as the Arroyos and Estradas. If I’m not mistaken, only Irene Marcos did not run and win in this last election. Bongbong and Imee both won not to mention Madam herself, the still lovely and graceful Madam Imelda. Good for them. For all the supposed greed they’re being accused of, they don’t compare to the Arroyos whom Catholics led by Jaime Cardinal Sin unconstitutionaly put into power. By the way, they’re all Catholics.

Catholics

The Manila Standard newspaper noted that only the Iglesia ni Cristo vote can be called a “religious vote”. The rest failed miserably. Remember the annointing of Villar by Quiboloy? Add to this the “implied” annointing of Villar by the Catholic El Shaddai of Velarde. So, it’s either the supposed numbers are bloated, or the members do not follow the instructions of their leader, or both. And what about Villanueva? He got 1 million votes! That’s all. Had anyone outside his church voted for him? If not and all his followers voted for him then it’s safe to say there are only 1 million JIL members of voting age.

The dominant Roman Catholic church is even more embarassing! As the Manila Standard reported:

“Six members of the Philippine Catholic Church hierarchy —Archbishop Ramon Arguelles of Lipa, Bishop Joseph Nacua of Ilagan, Bishop Antonio Tobias of Novaliches, Bishop Antonio Palang of San Jose de Mindoro, Bishop Antonio Navarra of Bacolod and retired Bishop Teodoro Bacani—have come out to openly endorse the presidential bid of JC de los Reyes of Ang Kapatiran party.

In the latest Comelec count from 88.95 percent of clustered precincts, de los Reyes was ninth of the nine presidential candidates with only 34,833 votes. The five active bishops head dioceses with more than three million votes and all de los Reyes was able to get is a mere fraction of this number. Either the bishops didn’t campaign for de los Reyes or their flock do not heed them at all when it comes to partisan politics.

This is not to say that the Catholic Church did not play a key and crucial role in this election. It did, through the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) which was the Comelec’s citizen arm in the last election.

It is not an exaggeration to say that the PPCRV played a key role in the success of the last election by providing some 500,000 volunteers to help in the voters’ education campaign, render assistance in the actual elections and conduct a count based on the copy of the returns that they are officially entitled to get.”

De los Reyes would be lucky if he gets 100,000 votes! Endorsed and embarrassed by the CBCP. And the Philippines is 80% Catholic. By the way, he’s Catholic too.

So there you go. May 10 elections in a snap.

google_ad_client = "pub-3331422980672574";

Talk about being ignorant. Let me set a few things straight based on my own personal take guided by what I’ve learned in my life.

Bloc voting?

It is not “bloc voting” per se. What outsiders think of as “bloc voting” is in truth a body of faithfuls agreeing on one judgement and executing that one judgement. It makes perfect sense based on Christian precepts found in the bible that a “one body” makes one decision and moves only in one direction. That’s all I’m going to say about “bloc voting”.

Democracy, in the Philippines? Really?

- Joseph Estrada won in the 1998 presidential elections by a landslide! It was the second landslide victory of any presidential election in the Philippines, with Magsaysay v Quirino being the first. By one estimate, he won by a margin of 6+ million votes. As most observer say, the INC vote matters more during tight elections where the margin is between 2 to 3 million votes. This means that Estrada had the majority of non-INC votes as well, and would have won even if the INC voted for his opponent. Truly impressive! He clearly had the mandate of the people and a testament to the beauty of democracy.

- In 2001, “Edsa Dos, a well orchestrated scheme to steal the seat of power from the filipino people was put into action by Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Fidel Ramos, elitist business including major media networks, and Cardinal Sin and Cory Aquino, of course. Foreign media saw through the smoke screen and reported it for what it was: a coup. Phil Browning of the Internation Herald Tribune called not a victory for democracy, but actually the death of democracy in the Philippines. Some called it a lynching with all its negative connotation. Even Lee Kuan Yew, well respected Prime Minister of Singapore called it for what it was, “unconstitutional”.

- 2008. Cory Aquino, the “inspiration”, “joan of arc” of all Edsa apologized for her role in the ouster of Mr Estrada and basically invalidated all the reasons they used to force him out of office. All of that down the drain. I wish she apologized to the poor Filipinos who’s dreams and aspiration as well as their trust of the democratic process went down the drain with Estrada at Edsa Dos. Philippine democracy still dead.

And so I return to the title of this piece. The leadership of the INC are totally opposite of those of other religion. If one would observe how the INC go about this necessary evil called election you can’t help but admire them. Unlike other religious leaders who calls a press conference to flaunt their “influence” over candidates, the INC leadership do with the least amount of fanfare. I’m even convinced that if it was up to them the INC leadership would rather not meet with politicians. In fact, Mrs Arroyo was famously snubbed for crashing a meeting.

I pity those of other religios leaders, especially EDSA DOS, for allowing their flock to be used in an illegal and undemocratic ouster of a sitting president only to find out that the one they put in power was a far more corrupt that the one they removed.

google_ad_client = "pub-3331422980672574";

title="Phillip Garcia Libels the Iglesia ni Cristo" href="http://phillipgarcia.wordpress.com" target="_self"> Phillip Garcia and published as news on newsvine.com.

I may be inadvertently giving new life to Phillip Garcia’s brief career move into blogging by responding to his post but I couldn’t resist. You see, I’d like Phillip Garcia to be in the same boat as his master Eliseo Fernando Soriano. Phillip Garcia is a shill of Soriano and like Soriano, they are both careless in speech and in writing. Bearing false witness is easy for them to do, and to them libel is not a crime. Phillip Garcia and about 2 or 3 of his cohorts went on topix.com, nowpublic.com and newsvine.com to spread lies about the Iglesia ni Cristo, and to praise they fugitive leader, the false prophet Eliseo Soriano. As you may observe, nothing came out of their dastardly act.

After reading the piece I begin to understand that this Phillip Garcia does not have any idea whatsoever what libel is. So let’s help him by defining libel:

libel – An untruthful statement about a person, published in writing or through broadcast media, that injures the person’s reputation or standing in the community. Because libel is a tort (a civil wrong), the injured person can bring a lawsuit against the person who made the false statement. Libel is a form of defamation , as is slander (an untruthful statement that is spoken, but not published in writing or broadcast through the media). [1]

In Phillip Garcia’s piece, he accuses the Iglesia ni Cristo and its leaders of crimes but provide no proof to base such accusations. What Phillip Garcia present are unverified supposedly reports from newspapers, of which complete citation are also no provided.

Phillip Garcia

So who is this Phillip Garcia? Don’t know much about him. Google search for his name doesn’t reveal anything substantial, let alone interesting. Except for a few things he wrote on ADD websites and his blog there’s really nothing to talk about. So why write about him? Well, let’s see what he wrote about the Iglesia ni Cristo.

You see, he wrote something on newsvine.com with this title:
“Behind the Iglesia Ni Cristo’s King Maker Role: A Chain of Crimes and Mythical Numbers”. This sounds like he knows what he’s talking about and that is, the Iglesia ni Cristo committed crimes. Let’s investigate further what he wrote to find out if he has proof to such charges.

He wrote and I quote:

Detailed here by prominent newspapers, the Supreme Court and a television station are random reports of the criminal and related activities of one such religious group, the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) or Church of Christ, considered to be the kingmaker in the Philippine political arena. It spans contemporary times but leads back to 1954 where the founder, Felix Manalo, is featured as a rapist. Finally, it ends with Eraño Manalo’s own words about the nature of their mythical membership. Eraño, now in his early 80s, is the son of Felix Manalo. ~Phillip Garcia

Now these are serious charges. First off he said he detailed reports of criminal activities of the Iglesia ni Cristo. Let’s see what details he was talking about. Citing what he claims as sources but not providing details which can be used for independent verification, he continues to write;

On February 28, 1989, an angered Iglesia Ni Cristo minister shot two men with a .38 caliber pistol in Baranggay Lamot II, Calauang, Laguna, as reported by Jun Tiosen in newspaper, “Abante.” Calauang Police Station Commander Lt. Romulo Endaya identified the minister as Joseph Dadoy of Ma. Victoria Poultry Farm of that town. … The INC minister was arrested and imprisoned in Calauang Municipal Jail. ~ibid

So here we see that even in his own writing, it is absolutely clear the crime was committed by a member of the Iglesia ni Cristo, NOT the Iglesia ni Cristo not leaders of the Iglesia ni Cristo as Phillip Garcia say. Allegedly, crime was committed by MEMBERS of the Iglesia ni Cristo and this is Phillip Garcia’s proof for calling the Iglesia ni Cristo and it’s leaders criminal. He further writes:

Three years after the shooting incident, on March 1992, four Iglesia Ni Cristo deacons butchered five students of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in the basement at the back of the INC chapel in Sta. Mesa, Manila.

According to Supreme Court Reports Annotated (SCRA), in August 28, 2000 Chief Justice Hilario Davide, Jr. rendered judgment on the case “PEOPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES, plaintiff-appellee, vs. JUANITO ABELLA, DIOSDADO GRANADA, BENJAMIN DE GUZMAN, and EDGARDO VALENCIA, accused-appellants,” where the four accused in these cases, who are deacons of the Iglesia Ni Cristo, were declared guilty beyond reasonable doubt on five (5) counts of MURDER. ~ibid

So here again is a case involving deacons or members of the Iglesia ni Cristo, NOT the Iglesia ni Cristo as clearly noted even in Phillip Garcia’s quoting of a supposed Supreme Court report. Again, Phillip Garcia’s clearly is guilty of libel for accusing the Iglesia ni Cristo and its leaders of crimes when it is clearly untrue. This clearly damages the images and honor of the leaders of the church not to mention the Iglesia ni Cristo and its members as a whole.

One would think that a normal person, after quoting the two cases mentioned above would realize that indeed the Iglesia ni Cristo clearly has nothing to do with the crimes and continuing to libel the organization would clearly be in itself criminal. But Phillip Garcia is apparently not normal, for he continued with this same pattern of making charges without proof. And again he did not provide sources to substantiate his accusations. Much like his amo the fugitive Eliseo Fernando Soriano, this Phillip Garcia does not seem to understand that you cannot just go around maligning people and damaging their refutation.

Displaying his distorted and skewed sense of right and wrong he writes:

With all these crimes surfacing from this religious group, it compels a sensical mind to ask why and to conclude that there must be a root of all these evil somewhere in the organization. And since the so-called “angel” Felix Manalo is the founder and former head of the Iglesia Ni Cristo, he is the primary subject to tracing this root, as well as to scrutinizing the founding principles of their church. ~ibid

Interpol Wanted Poster

If we follow his argument, then it would be appropriate to call him and the rest of the followers of Eliseo Fernando Soriano as fugitives. Soriano is in the Interpol watch list and has a wanted poster of him. If you search for “Soriano, Eliseo” on Google, it would be the first on the list.

He then accuses the deceased former leader of the Iglesia ni Cristo of a crime but again does not provide any verifiable source. Out of respect for the former leader of the Iglesia ni Cristo, I will not dignify Phillip Garcia’s lies by repeating them here. Suffice it to say, these charges are baseless and untrue and anyone making them should be ashamed of themselves and deserves to be put in jail.

Next on his list of attacks is the doctrine of unity which the Iglesia ni Cristo practices. He claims this to be coercion and suppression of the freedom of choice and that this practice is meant to increase the political influence of the Iglesia in Cristo. But is this true? The current leader of the Iglesia ni Cristo, Executive Minister Erano Manalo, defended the Iglesia ni Cristo’s unity and right to vote:

BLOC VOTING is a manifestation of religious unity that is essential to spiritual salvation.

“By voting as one, INC members are merely acting in accordance with their religious belief which is based on the Holy Scriptures,”

“They do so, not for the purpose of ensuring the victory of the chosen candidates, but primarily to give flesh to their belief that only by acting in unity with their brethren will they be truly faithful to the Church and thus be able to attain salvation,”

Manalo also maintained that the INC members’ exercise of their right of suffrage cannot be validly questioned by anyone “without infringing upon the right to religious profession and worship, which embraces the freedom to believe and freedom to act on one’s belief.” ~Aning, Jerome; “Iglesia leader defends bloc voting as a matter of faith”; Philippine Daily Inquirer; March 1, 2003

It’s clear from the news article that the Iglesia ni Cristo is not using its practice of unity to gain influence for how can you do that if you can’t ensure victory for the candidates you carry?

Finally, Phillip Garcia then complains about the number of Iglesia ni Cristo members and the lack of published reports about this number. I for one do not understand his obsession to find out the exact number and find it funny that he’s troubled by it. If you want to get a general idea as to how big the Iglesia ni Cristo is, here’s a tip. Count their places of worship, multiply that by the capacity of each chapel, multiply that by the number of service per chapel and you’ll get a sense of how many member there are.

I have just proven in this short article that his Phillip Garcia is much like his leader, the fugitive Eliseo Fernando Soriano. They are both guilty of libel and if I had my way they will both be in jail.

Sources:

Requejo, Rey E (May 4, 2006). “<a
