Our deepest sympathy to those who lost love ones. You are all in our thoughts.

FN 57. This is the type of hand gun Major Nidal Malik Hasan used to kill at least 13 people and injuring a few more. The deeply religious and yet troubled man was a trained doctor whose task was to treat soldiers suffering from the ravages of the horrors of war. And now it seems he created horror to more.

Born in Arlington, Va, Nidal was the oldest son of immigrants from a town near Jerusalem. In 1988 despite objections from his parents, he joins the army saying “he was going to do my duty to the country”.

In 2003 he completes his psychiatry training in Maryland despite having mental health issues himself. By 2007, he finishes his residency at Walter Reed treating soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who suffers from PTSD and by 2008, he was promoted to Major.

In May 2009, he wrote a short article at scribd.com, equating the heroism of soldier who jump onto grenades to save their comrades to Islamic suicide bombers. By July, he transferred to the Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood. Fort Hood is a hub for soldiers returning from and deploying to war zones.

What drove a idealistic, seemingly America-loving patriot in 1988 when he first joined the Army, into a cold-blooded murdered who massacred his own comrades in arms is beyond me. We may not fully know and understand the reason why. What we do know, it hurts.
